  The idared apple varieties first developed at the University of Idaho Agricultural Experiment Station in 1942, it is a cross between two apple varieties Jonathan and Wagener.

  The apples themselves are medium in size and generally round, with a layer bright red over a green-red background. The flesh is yellowish-green, although sometimes a faint pink tinge can be detected. They are sweet and tart, juicy yet crisp and firm. The best fruits have a sprightly, aromatic, and refreshing flavour, although some may lack strong flavour.

  The main feature of idared appled is its remarkably long storage potential - even in a domestic fridge it will readily keep for 6 months. As a result it has become quite popular, both in North America and Europe.

  The idared has a white flesh with a firm body, and generally considered to be tart and juicy. For these reasons, it is very well suited for making apple sauces, pies, and cakes.
